Message from the General Chair

It is my great pleasure to welcome you to the First International Workshop on Connected Health: Using IT to Integrate the HealthCare Enterprise, held on December 02, 2006, at the Hotel Grauer Baer of Innsbruck, Austria. The Workshop is aimed at providing a momentous international platform for bringing attendees up-to-date on scientific research in healthcare and information systems. I hope you will find your attendance both rewarding and exciting.

The Workshop is dotingly supported by the organizers of the ICST International Conference on Pervasive Computing Technologies for Healthcare and researchers from all over the world. I would like to take this opportunity to express my thanks to the Conference organizers and the members of organizing committee for their contributions to making this Workshop possible.

Introduction to the Technical Program of ConnectingHealth 2006

The one-day Workshop serves as a forum for discussions in current research of technology and management in healthcare information systems.

Papers presented in the Technical Program are selected to address various aspects of IT and healthcare in the areas of healthcare network management, network optimization, and healthcare enterprise systems. The work by Varshney seeks to improve quality of patient monitoring with wireless communications. Work by Ingstrup and Larsen applies participatory design to manage electronic health records. The morning session is concluded by E. A. Viruete Navarro's presentation of results in measurement of a 3G based mobile telemedicine system.

The afternoon session covers important topics in healthcare enterprise systems for patient monitoring, started by Morak’s paper on heart condition monitoring utilizing near field communication technology to conclude the morning session. Finally, Becker presents her work on optimization of mobile technology for supporting elderly caregivers. The Workshop will finish with a panel discussion on future directions.

As this year’s chair, I would like to thank all contributors to this program and authors for their presentations. Again, welcome to the ConnectingHealth Workshop.
